Sure in retrospect I haven’t been looking all that long & hard (I’ve only been home since June 1st) , but hip hurray I got a job! Starting on Monday, I’ll be working for Inked Magazine, a beautiful tattoo lifestyle magazine!

It’s going to be interesting getting back to working everyday, having a schedule, and not having as much free time. But I think it’s going to be a great experience. Based on first impression, the office has a great vibe, lots of creative people, and hopefully I’ll fit right in. So we’ll see. Regardless it feels great to start moving forward again.

You can hardly turn on the television or look at movie previews without Nicolas Sparks’ latest & greatest being mentioned. And you know what… I am getting sick & tried of him. How does the man do it? Nick is probably the biggest hopeless romantic that has ever lived. Between “The Notebook”, “Dear John”, & “A Walk To Remember”… it’s a guaranteed night of weeping. Has he ever had a happy ending?

I’m not going to lie, I did like “The Notebook”, but obviously I sobbed hysterically through it’s entirety. In my own defense, the first time I watched it was around the time my grandpa died, so anything to do with senior citizens & their long romances were touchy subjects. Psh, thanks alot Nicolas.

But then I think of his wife. Could you imagine being married to him? His office is probably like the office of Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter; all pink with decorative pink plates with kittens all over the walls. His wife must be the strong one in the relationship, having to comfort him during sad movies & commercials. She’s the one during the night who has to go downstairs with a baseball bat when Nick hears a noise.

Or do you think he just enjoys making girls cry? Maybe he had a hard time during high school where he was constantly being rejected. Perhaps one day Nick vowed that he would get back at them all by writing heart breaking weepy stories, leaving them with doubts that there is no such thing as a happy ending. Obviously once you find love they are going to die from a weird disease or get dementia… When you look at it that way, he wins. Who knows..

As you probably noticed from a blog ago, I’m SO stuck in a rut. Not only is my job search not going the way I hoped, but things are on the rocks with Kyle. I won’t get too much into it, but basically since we’ve been back in the states, our relationship has been off. And slowly things got to a point where every time I had a drink, would basically explode on him with all the things that I wasn’t happy about or wished he had done differently during my mother being in the hospital and the two months after she passed away. I’ve been so terribly confused; my life, where it’s going now, who I want in it, & what the next steps to take. So I’ve asked him for a break to be alone to sort my heart & brain out.

Way back in New Zealand, I started planning with my sister going with her to this event she has gone to forever called Pennsic War. It’s this…well it’s hard to explain. Here’s the explanation from the website:

“Pennsic is an annual event, in the guise of a “War”, between the Kingdoms of the East and the Middle of the Society for Creative AnachronismPennsic is also the largest Society event, with attendance in recent years exceeding 10,000. The scheduled activities include large melee battles, tournaments, archery, stage performances, dancing, and hundreds of classes on medieval topics. The marketplace has over 200 merchants selling a variety of wares.”

What will I be doing in the midst of all this excitement? Probably happily (and hopefully) dressed like a gypsy, sipping wine all day, exploring, and dancing. Just what my soul needs <3

Seeya in a week, hopefully with a clear mind & all the answers.

Sigh.. I don’t think I’ll ever find a job. I don’t know what I was thinking quitting my job & assuming that someone would welcome me back with open arms when I was ready to come back to the professional world.

So far I’ve been to

3 recruiters – all of which made open exciting promises & had so many opportunities, but of course didn’t follow-up with any good leads…even after I emailed AND called.

4 interviews for restaurant/cafe managing positions. One I didn’t get, one I got but was way too low paid, & another two I’m waiting on.

1 interview at Rolling Stone. Yes I said Rolling Stone. Maybe I’ll hear back, maybe not. I’m not staying hopeful.

And must we not forget the 500 jobs I’ve probably applied for over the course of the past two months.

It just sucks, you know. The last time around when I was looking for jobs my mom would always say, “keep looking, there is the perfect job out there for everyone”.

I can’t help but worry that there isn’t a job out there for me…that there isn’t anything out there that I’ll really love, but more just deal with.

I’m kinda having a sad down day.

“This week’s edition of “The Splenda Stealer Diet” is one of the Splenda Stealer’s nearest and dearest, her friend and partner in crime, KC! Once a co-worker/neighbor in Hoboken, KC left the confines of a boring desk job in Midtown Manhattan to live and explore New Zealand for a year. Now back for practically her third summer in a row (the southern hemisphere was all summery while NYC had blizzards), she has been stationed at her dad’s house in Middletown, NJ, where she spends her time job searching and hanging around the pool in between nibbles of curries, falafel, and Thai food.

Remember my friend Jamie that I met in New Zealand? Last week I opened the mail box and was greeted with a care package from Scotland! Jamie is by far one of the sweetest people I have ever met. She knows what going on back here at home with my family & has been so comforting and emotionally right beside me despite the distance. As I opened the package, it put a smile on my face because… well look,

My favorite summer weekends are those that take advantage of all the fun things locally that you can do outdoors. This past weekend did just that.

Saturday morning, I woke up super early (ugh around 6) to go fishing on a party boat with my dad, two of his close friends from college, & my brother. It was a great day out on the water, a little breezy & super sunny. The one thing I wasn’t too keen about was the fact that the boat was super crowded, so it was hard to maneuver around. But whatever, we caught a bunch of sea bass & it was great catching up with my dad’s friend and had a BBQ afterward. Later, my brother, one of his friends, and my friend Chiarina, & I went out in Red Bank for a couple drinks. I really don’t go out all that much at all anymore, so it was a nice change of pace.

Dad & Jason

The next day, Kyle came over & him, my brother, Dad & I went to the Lobsterfest in Bradley Beach! Last Summer, I went to the Seafood Festival in Belmar and was wonderfully delighted by the amount of delicious cheapy seafood. Plus there’s always vendors selling crafts & musical entertainment, so it’s a guaranteed good afternoon. Plus, who doesn’t love $12.00 lobster?! After we took a lap around & devoured our lobster, we headed out for some ice cream. Yummm

Hello Lover

Summer, out of all the seasons, zips by the quickest. It’s important to spend weekends outdoors & really take advantage of the beautiful sunshiny weather. When you think about it, winters are spent indoors, so it’s good to have that yearly balance. Does that make sense? Anyway, I fell asleep Sunday night very satisfied wondering, “hmm what fun things should I plan for the remainder of the summer?”

While waiting for the subway a few days ago, a certain single episode popped in my mind and immediately I thought, “why didn’t I ever blog about that, it was hilarious”?

So here we go!

A few Decembers ago, my friend Emily invited me along to a party at Galway Hooker (fun pub type bar) for one of her friends celebrating his first year of getting through law school – it was an interesting mix of people; tons of other first year law students, some of Emily’s other old friends, her twin sister, & us. Needless to say it was a drunky night, fun-filled with trying to pass as law students ourselves (obviously it didn’t work out well because we didn’t know a thing about what went on at law school), dance partied around, and all and all just made a fun mess of ourselves. Right around the time things started getting fuzzy, I saw a REALLY cute boy making his way around the bar. So cute in fact that my drunk alter-ego pseudo followed him about, wondering how I could get him to notice me. Sure enough, I’m guessing he caught on to my stalking ways & chatted me up a bit. Somehow or another he took my number & said would call to hang out.

Hurray for me! Nothing was better than waking up the next morning safe & sound in my own bed & knowing that somewhere on the island of Manhattan there was a cute boy in the possession of my phone number. The following Thursday, he actually called and said we should meet up. I said, “that would be great. Why don’t you bring a few friends, I’ll bring out some girls, and we’ll go out in Hoboken”. He agreed and we decided that we’d meet the next night.

In general, you usually assume cute boys have cute friends. I gushed to Emily & we were looking forward to seeing Phil (cute boys name) and the mess of cute friends he would bring along.

So Friday night arrived and Emily, her sister Lynsey, & I went to a bar close to the PATH to meet the boys.

In walked Phil and immediately I felt relief rush over me….I hate to say, but I was nervous my drunk version of myself made a mistake…phew still cute. BUT then came his two friends….

One was the tallest widest boy I had ever seen, but perhaps it was only because the other friend was a cute pocket size leprechaun. Immediately I whipped around to look at Emily & Lynsey and both of their jaws had dropped.

Oh well, didn’t look like we were making any lasting relationships.

Overall the night was pretty good; the guys turned out to be pretty fun – the super tall guy was kinda shy, but so sweet & the little one was a ball of party sunshine…but oh Phil. He ended up being a pretentious tool who tried again & again to impress me with how much he made, where he lived, and where his clothes came from. Yawn.

Later in the evening, Phil’s friends mysteriously disappeared leaving him behind, and he said “oh weird, my friends are gone…maybe I can just come over to your place till my car arrives”.

I didn’t know where Emily ran off to…sometimes she would get drunk & tired, and the sneak on home…but I did NOT want to be alone with him.

So I furiously texted her with a “GET TO MY APARTMENT NOW. AND YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE TILL HE DOES”.

Luckily, she only lived a 1/4 of a block away and came to my rescue just in time

So Emily, Phil, & I sat on my couch side by side, hoping to god there was an actual car on it’s way & not just some ploy to spend the night.

I’ve been reminiscing so much lately, being back around again. I so appreciated my time being single and all the ridiculous situations I got myself in. But at the same time, it’s a relief to be out of that world.

In tribute to my mom, one of her friends Andrea (who is also a very close family friend) & I decided to get tattoos. My mom was always kind of against tattoos, never too sure why I bothered. Then around my fourth or so, she started to warm up and actually mused about what she would get…tulips! She loved to garden, always so excited when the first tulips came, letting her know that spring was there at last & a new season of gardening had begun. Her garden was always so beautiful, so many different types of flowers and unbelievable amounts of flower boxes. It was her Eden & couldn’t think of a better way to spend the summer than basking in her own flower paradise.

So that’s what Andrea & I got, orangey-yellow tulips. Over the past few years, my mom was drawn to oranges and reds, yellows & greens, so I figured the perfect way to tribute a tattoo was include them all in one piece.

Here’s mine

Andrea got the same thing, but a little smaller and in the inside of her ankle.
